15th May, 2012
What a wonderful Assembly we had yesterday where we were entertained by years 2 and 4 and a special appearance by Josh Burr who is currently on work experience from Mornington Secondary School. Josh is a past student and has been assisting Mrs Jones in the Music Department. Thanks Josh for your contribution to Osborne over the past two weeks.
Miss Ogilvie reminded everyone of a special Education Week activity on Tuesday 22nd May. Please find more detailed information further in the newsletter and give your support to this Family activity.
Although numbers were small for our Working Bee on Saturday a great deal was achieved. I must thank all those who were able to give up some time to work on the gardens and Mrs Commerford for the pre-planning that occurred to ensure the morning was as productive as possible. We still need volunteers to support the maintenance of the garden and cooking with the years 3 & 4 students. If you have any spare time or know of retirees who could assist please contact the office.
Years 3 and 5 are involved in NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy tests this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. These tests assess student knowledge and skills in writing, reading, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and principals which can be used to improve student achievement. NAPLAN report results will be made available to schools and parents later in the year.
Traffic Management is obviously still an issue particularly at the end of the day. It is not up to school staff to become involved in disputes between drivers. Instead we will be in contact with Mornington Shire and the local police to seek assistance. Drivers will be booked if they are not adhering to the signs.
Year 6 students are currently at Ace-Hi Camp, Boneo. The latest report is that all is well and the weather is not affecting the fun the students are having. Ace-Hi is a well-equipped, outdoor adventure camp where students are challenged to try new activities in a controlled setting and develop leadership skills. I am looking forward to visiting the camp today.
Thank you to all families who are busy selling the chocolates and to those who have already returned their money. We rely heavily on fundraising to purchase many extra items that make our programs special. Your assistance with all fundraising is greatly appreciated.
Once again Osborne Primary is participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Each time you shop at Woolworths please make sure you collect your stickers from the checkout and place them on the sticker card (one has been included with the newsletter). Place completed cards in the box in the school office area. Extra cards can be collected from the office. At the end of the program we are able to order educational resources from Modern Teaching Aids. Last year we were able to purchase over $5500 worth of Science equipment. The more we collect the more resources we will be able to select. Perhaps you could suggest to extended family members that they also keep their stickers for you.
At Osborne we strongly believe in the importance of our partnership with families for the ultimate benefit of the children. Thank you for working with us to achieve the best we can for all our students.

Students at Osborne Primary School are safe and responsible users of computer technologies. Many students have developed tips to encourage members of our community to be safe and responsible as well. This month's tips are;
* If you feel like you are being cyber bullied, make sure you tell someone you trust. For example a parent or a teacher. (Lucy D, Caylee and Caitlin grade 6)
* Don't click on pop ups (Eli grade 3)
Last month's:
* If you receive an inappropriate message, don't send bad messages back it will just make things worse (Emma and Shelley - grade 6)
* Avoid opening something that you are not sure of - (Ethan Mc - grade 4)
Stay tuned for more tips during the year and remember to be eSmart
